Before Your Puppy Lands

Six things worth having ready

• A crate, set up before arrivalDoor open, blanket inside, somewhere quiet but not isolated. Your puppy should meet it on its own terms.
• The same food we have been feedingSome is in your go-home kit, but buy a bag now. Switching food on day one causes an upset stomach every time.
• A vet appointment bookedWithin 72 hours of arrival. This is also what activates your health guarantee, so do not skip it.
• A small, boring space for night oneNot the run of the house. A bathroom or a corner of your bedroom. Expect crying — it passes in two or three nights.
• Water bowl, collar and a couple of toysShallow bowl, soft collar. Skip the toy megastore for now; your puppy wants your shoes anyway.
• Nothing else planned for 48 hoursNo visitors, no parties, no long car trips. Let the puppy learn the house first.
